Hello Rolf,
Again, "A great" newsletter. I'm going back to Normandy this coming
June. I've designed a new postcard about the "TOP SECRET-BIGOT" program
that was responsible for the planning stage's and execution of Operation
Overlord. The cards are numbered 1-5000 and can be seen at the very top
of my webpage: http://www.ww2dday.com
I hope to be in Normandy on the 30th of May.

Re: 75th Inf Div newsline no. 53 (04.04.2002)
Hi Rolf,
My father is is the final stages of Alzheimers; however, I am interested in any information about his service with the 75th. 1st Lt Donald Shannehan. I have a photo dated May 45 taken in Hagen, Germany. Do know he was stationed at a POW camp at the end of the war sorting out German soldiers.. He returned from Germany 4 or 5 months after it all ended.
Thanks
Don Shannehan
donshann@optonline.net
++Moderators note: ++
Dear Don,
Hagen is not far away from here (Plettenberg). In Plettenberg, there
was a POW camp for german soldiers, that tried to escape the war in our
wooden area. The 75th Inf Div HQ was in Plettenberg from April 20 until
June 6 1945. There was also a POW camp in Hemer, but
that was for russian POW´s and these DP´s (displaced persons)
were freed by the 75th Div.
Both camps were photographed by Joseph D. Karr, 167th Signal Company.
He is a member of this newsline and a personal friend. He also was (again)
in Plettenberg together with his son in 1997 as a guest of honor. His email
adress is: 167thSig@comcast.net
Maybe he knew your father, if he has been in Plettenberg. Maybe he
is on one of his photos.
Greetings from Germany

Dear Rolf,
I have just been reading of the terrible tragedy at the school in Erfurt .I had a quick look at the map of the area and it doesn't look so far from Plettenberg.....maybe 200Km due East.? This made me think of you and your children.
The news article said it was the worst school massacre recorded and it will probably react in some way with all students in the area. I hope your children will not be too badly affected.
I trust 2002 has started welll for you all and continues to do so.
With best wishes,

I was a medic with the 289th. Was in action from 24 December to about
15/20 January 1944. Was assigned to regimental headquarters under the command
and authority of the Colonel. I am not certain which battalion I was assigned
to, but then again a lot of things get ever more hazy, specially the old,
older and oldest.

3.) Stalag VI A, Iserlohn-Hemer, Germany
"J Puckett" <puckett5@worldnet.att.net>
Fri, 22 Mar 2002 18:17:05 -0600
I have been corresponding with a man by the name of Werner Schwarz about
what I know to be Stalag 6 in Germany. I found out my dad was there
when I read the back of some of his photos. One of the photos read,
"Stalag 6 - Camp Roosevelt POW cage - Russian POWs going home." If
you look at the photos on my 75th Division Website, you can see this photo
http://www.members.tripod.com/hldnoqtr/photos4.htm.
Anyway, I was able to find out, with the gracious help of Werner, that
this Stalag was known as Stalag VI A and was located in Hemer, Germany
which is in the vicinity of Iserlohn - I have a picture or two of dad in
Iserlohn as well.
Sorry, I provided the wrong link to my site for the Stalag photos.
Here's the correct one:
http://www.members.tripod.com/hldnoqtr/photos14.htm
Below is the last email I received from Werner that includes a link to information about Stalag VI A. Unfortunately, the site is written in German, but there are a few photos of the Stalag there as well. Maybe someone could provide a full or partial translation of the website?
I thought maybe you all might know some veterans who were also situated there toward the end of the war who would be interested in this information.
Here's the email:
Dear Jay
The photos on your site make it clear: if you compare them with the
ones at http://www.hemer.de/stalag/stalagvi.htm
you will see that "Stalag 6" must have been Stalag VI A. In the background
of the photo with the Russian girl are the typical barracks of Hemer. They
are quite different from the usual POW camp type as they were planned to
house German armoured troops.
I tried a Google search for "Stalag VI A" but there doesn't seem to be much on this topic except the mentioned Hemer website. Its information is really extensive, maybe you could find someone to translate it for you?
Regards
Werner

To whom it may concern,
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Joseph D. Karr, 309 Coldiron Drive, Rochester Hills, Michigan, USA. I was a combat photographer in the U.S.Army serving in Europe from 7 September 1944 until 20 June 1945. My unit, the 167th Signal Photo Company arrived at Omaha Beach at 0930 hour on 7 September 1944. This was three months after D-Day but we still felt the sense of the battle and the sacrifices that were made on that day in June. I feel strongly that the beaches at Normandy should remain as a memorial to those that died fighting there, Germans, French, English and Americans. To desecrate that Beach by converting it to a muscle beach for young men and women to play and carouse desecrates the ground that so many young people died for.
Please reconsider your intentions.
Sincerely,
Joseph D. Karr

Susan,
I'm glad to have helped. My Dad was there and we often talk about the
war. The reason why the 291st Regt fought at Grand Halleux was to capture
the town of Vielsalm just a couple of miles to the South. The 289th Regt
was pushing North toward Vielsalm fighting in Salmchateau. Together, the
objective was to take Vielsalm in a double envelope maneuver. However,
the decision to order the 291st Regt to attack across over 400 yards of
open field in a foot of snow in olive drab clothing into a well entrenched
enemy in the woods facing the field, not only on Jan 15th, but again on
16th was crazy. My Dad attacked on the morning of Jan. 16th and made it
across the field but got wounded pushing further into the attack. Alot
of good young men died there.
In Grand Halleux, Belgium there is a plaque dedicated to the 291st Regt
men who fought there. It reads:
Grand Halleux, Belgium
January, 1945
IN MEMORIAM
TO THOSE GALLANT AMERICAN SOLDIERS
AND STALWART BELGIAN CITIZENS
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN
THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE
GRANT UNTO THEM, O LORD, ETERNAL REST
291st Infantry Regiment, 75th Division

Good luck in your research, and let me know if I can help.

Steve

Dear Steve,
Thank you so much for all the information. This is really some
intense stuff, looking at all the accounts of the Battle of the Bulge and
Grand Halleux.
This information about PFC Albert
Pompa will mean so much to his surviving siblings. I can't understand
how they didn't know what happened to him. Isn't the war dept. or
someone supposed to notify the family?
Someone had contacted my stepdad
a few years ago, after they had stumbled on Albert's grave overseas, by
accident.
My stepdad had dismissed it and
I guess he figured it couldn't have been his uncle.
You have helped a family
who is very grateful for the information you've gathered.
I will try to contact this Curt
Deardorff, or my stepdad may want to do it. Will let you know if
we hear from him.
Take care and God Bless You,
Susan Guy

Hi Susan,
Over the years, I've collected first hand accounts of the Battle of Grand Halleux. I am attaching info from Peter Dounis and he talks about Al Pompa ("Big Papa"). I have not been in contact with Peter for some time. Another G-Company friend, Curtis C. Deardorff (Lieutenant, G-Company, 291st Regt, 3rd Platoon leader) may know how to contact Peter. If Al Pompa was in 3rd Platoon, he may have known Al. I also have not been in touch with Curt for some time but his address is below.

Here is also his email address:

By the way, if you make contact with Curt, please send my regards and my email address. It's been a couple of years since I've been in touch with Curt and since had to re-format my PC and lost his email. Curt also receives Rolf Wilmink's email newsline so you may want to post a message there.
From what I read about Al Pompa, your family should be very proud. Let me know if you would like more information on the Grand Halleux battle in general. I will be happy to help.
Warm regards,
Steve

Hi
PFC Albert T. Pompa was with the 291st Infantry Reg. 75th Division,
Co. G.
Since I sent you the e-mail, I did find out that he is buried at Henri-Chapelle
Cemetery.
I think there was a reference by a Peter Dournis who was with him when
he died. Do you know if Peter Dournis is still alive?
Thank you for your help and the quick reply. Susan Guy

12.) Question about 75th Inf. Div
"ken buechele" <kenandval@chartermi.net>
Sat, 6 Apr 2002 11:13:16 -0600
Hi,
I am looking for information regarding where my grandfather served during WWII. He served in the 3429th ORd MAM Co. but I knew he was transferred a couple of times. He brought home a 75th Inf. Div. patch, and talked about the battle of the buldge (which so far I haven't been able to place his other unit there).
His name is Henry William Buechele, some called him 'Pete'. I have his service #'s if that would help. Would you have any information like Unit Histories or Morning reports that might reveal transfers, etc.
Thanks for your help

Hello, Mr. Wilmink,
My name is Claudette DeLuna, and the reason I am writing to you is that I recently saw the movie Pearl Harbor, and became interested (finally) in listening to my Dad's stories of his time in WWII. He was a member of the 291st Infantry Regiment, 75th Division, and said something about "I". His name is Ashley Nathaniel Duncan, and I do know for sure that he was at the Battle of the Bulge. He met and married my mother in Warmereville, France. He doesn't know I'm writing to you, but I just thought for your records you would be interested to know about him.
Thanks so much,

Hello Mr. Wilmink!
I am researching my grandfather's participation in WWII.
He was wounded on January 24, 1945.
I have his Discharge Papers, and it appears this occurred at the Battle
in the Ardennes; since he was a member of the 75th Infantry Division, 290th
Infantry Regiment.
Unfortunately he died in 1973, and I have very little information about his injury; except that he was hit by machine gun bullets, and had to have a leg amputated.
I was reviewing your web-site, and was wondering if I could get a copy of "The 75th Infantry Division in Combat".
I would love to get a fax copy, or a mailed copy:

Hello from Sharon Sorg,
My father, David Sorg, was in the 75th Division, 289th regiment,
3rd battalion. He asked me to try and find out if there were any
kind of citations given for closing the Colmar Pocket. My father
says that, in early February, 1946, his regiment fought to close the pocket
around Colmar and then the French went in and actually took it. My
father said that they had driven the last of the German troops out of France.
He also would be very glad to hear from anybody who was there or anyone
who would like to talk about WWII. Please respond through me and
I will forward messages to my father. Thanks so much. Sharon

I was told that my great grandfather fought in WW II I have wanted
to find some kind of tags of his to wear and keep..i have never met him
but somehow still feel a kind of connection. He did not die in the war.
He died because of his habbit of smoking.i was told in stories of him that
he smoked until the day he died. mabie it was the war that made the habbit.
Or mabie it was somthing else. i guess well never know that question. but
i would like to dedicate this to all the brave men and women who serve
our country today. including my biological father who is a marine and all
of those who have died whether it was in any war or in their bed because
of something else. you all have done so much for this country and you all
hold a special place in my heart even though i will never know you all

A wonderful and informative site on the 290th Infantry Regiment. My
father, Sir Y. Fong, Cpl, served with the 290th Infantry Regiment, 75th
Infantry Division in WW 2. He was a special case, one of only a few Chinese-Americans(1st
generation) to serve in ETO. He was originally assigned with the Army Air
Corp(8th Air Force) in England. Eventually assigned as infantryman replacement
with the 290th Infantry Regiment. His MOS was Infantryman and Guard. He
served in ETO from 1943 to 1945 and participated in five battles/campaigns(Air
Offensive Europe/Normandy/N. France Rhineland and Ardennes). He is 77 years
old and unable to remember alot. He is healthy and doing well in Sacramento,
California. Would like to know any information or his time with the 290th
Infantry Regiment. My brother and I are ex-military and wishes to say -

To whom it may concern:
This is a letter sent to you regarding the problem of us not being able
to put a veteran stone on my husband's grave. My husband Vito is
buried in Mount Hope
Cemetery, Jackson Ave., Hastings on the Hudson, NY.
Our local Veterans office gave us the forms with their approval, to
take to the cemetery office. The cemetery would not approve of this
being done. I have been told that the base of the family stone is
too big. They never explained this to me until someone in the office
at Mt. Hope Cemetery finally did so. It seems that the base (not
the stone) is 1 to 1-½ inches over what it was supposed to be.
Our plot is 9x 10 which I am told is a large plot. No one can
understand why this is such a problem. Why did they allow the people
we bought it from to install it if it was the wrong size? They say
that my husband signed a form that he would never put any footstones on
the grave. My husband Vito, could never have thought the veterans
marker was a footstone. He would never have done that if he knew
he would
not be able to get a memorial stone from the Veteran's Association.
He always reminded us that when he died he would be entitled to a stone
from the government.
This stone would have made him very proud, as he was proud to be a
veteran. This would be an honor to him.
He belonged to the Amvets Association, VFW and the National organization of the 10th Armored Division. He was 18 years old when he volunteered for the service during World War II. After basic training he was shipped to Europe when most young men today are in High School. He loved his country. There is a beautiful American flag flying over his grave. We know this is what he would want.
After seeing so many of these stones through out Mt. Hope and all our local cemeteries, we the family feel that my husband helped to win the war, but in his death we are losing the battle to pay him tribute.
Our family would appreciate any help you can provide us with. You can
help by contacting the cemetery asking them to please reconsider their
decision, and any
other comments you wish to add.
Thank you,
Mary De Santis

Von: stan <stan.googe@virgin.net>
Hi
How many of you can remember songs such as Don't Fence Me In, When The Lights Go On Again All Over The World, Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree (with anyone else but me) and other favourites songs from WW2?
Tomahawk Films have aquired 50 mint condition LP 33 rpm vinyl records of Anne Shelton singing the above songs and another 16 wartime favourites on an album recorded in 1984 to celebrate the return of former GI's, veterans of the D-Day Landings some 40 years before, when they made an emotional pilgrimage as one of the 'big anniversaries' back to the pre-embarkation camps of Southern England thence onto the landing beaches of Omaha and Utah in Normandy, France.
If you are a WW2 Veteran or a relative or friend of a WW2 Veteran then this is the album to add to any collection of war-time songs.

My name is Devin DeFeo. I'm interested in information concerning a great uncle of mine name Walter Jarosz. According to the American Battle Monuments Commissions Web page he served with the 75th Infantry Division (I've pasted the info below this message for your reference). I was wondering if you might have or be able to point me in the direction of any detailed information (pictures, circumstances of death, etc.) on my uncle. My family members don't seem to recall much about him and the ones that did are deceased. It may be of some help, I do know that he was nick named "Whitey" or "Uncle Whitey." Thank God services have slowed down a bit. Even so these 13 services are 13 too many but reality sets in and "Old Soldiers" do die, they also fade away but as long as someone has memories of them they are never gone. We shall never forget . Let us keep their memory in our minds at the rising and setting of the sun, to never forget their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their comrades, who remained behind in graves in foreign soil and in the oceans deep.
History may overlook many of the brave deeds of our gallent men and
women yet their memory will ever live in the hearts and minds of freedom
loving people of this great nation. The heart of every true American, must
needs throb with wonderous pride as they read the names and deeds and view
the faces of the immortal American Heros who served our country. Many are
portrayed within the Honor Guard web pages. http://honorguard.org
For those who died in the service and others who are now gone, the
honor and glory is theirs. For those who offered all and still live, MAY
THE GLORY FOREVER RING.
Yes history may overlook many of the brave deeds of our gallent men and women. All are Heroes to me and at times I gain some info on their military service. Many have given even more, such as those who gave "Their all". I just cannot acquire all the info on some Heroes however read these in part obituaries for the services I gave Thursday and Friday . Don't surprise me that we live in a free country with heroes like Glenn Holder and John Darrow who defended our country back in WW-II. Both are "Silver Star" recipients. John Darrow also has Two Purple Hearts.
Glenn A. 'Skee' Holder, Sr., age 85, long-time resident of Jones, before moving to Claremore, passed away at the Oklahoma Veterans Center, Claremore, on March 6, 2002. He was born Dec. 16, 1916 to A.L. & Effie Holder in rural Wellston. A veteran of World War II, serving with the 45th Infantry Division Field Artillery, he took part in the landings of North Africa, invasion of Sicily, allied landing at Salerno, the battle of Anzio, the invasion of Southern France, the drive into Germany, & the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp. On October 18, 2001, he was one of 87 veterans recognized & honored by the French Consul General, Republic of France, for his part in the World War II liberation of France. Glenn was awarded the Bronze Star & Silver Star, meritorious combat awards. After the war, he went to work at Tinker Air Force Base where he retired in 1979 with 34 years of service.
John Calvin Darrow, age 83, lifelong Mustang resident, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, in an Oklahoma City hospital, after a period of declining health. He was born February 5, 1919, on the family farm Southwest of Mustang, to James Paul and Ruth Payne Darrow. He lived his entire life on the family farm. He farmed, truck farmed, ran a dairy and did custom butchering. He was a graduate of Mustang High School and served in the US Army during WWII. He took part in the Normandy Invasion and was present at the Omaha Beach Invasion receiving two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. He was a member of the American Legion. The Mustang Oklahoma American Legion assisted in folding John's flag.
What so proudly they hailed...
26 million American veterans are alive today. Five million of those
are WW-ONE & WW-II veterans.. Only a few thousand are WW-ONE veterans
as they are all over 100 years old. WW-II veterans are all in their 70's,
80's, and 90's, some over 100 years old. 1200 are dying every day. We live
in a big country. It is estimated the numbers will peak in the year 2007.
The worlds greatest generation is passing before our eyes. Even so I give
many honors for Korean and Vietnam veterans as they are getting along in
years. Stand up and salute these immortal American Heroes. You can help
by sponsoring this Honor Guard as I am funded by sponsors and my own expense.

Subject: St Peter
On their way to get married, a young couple are involved in a fatal car accident. The couple find themselves sitting outside the Pearly Gates waiting for St. Peter to process them into Heaven.
While waiting, they begin to wonder, Could they possibly get married in Heaven? When St. Peter shows up, they asked him. St. Peter says,"I don't know. This is the first time anyone has asked. Let me go find out," and he leaves.
The couple sat and waited for an answer . . . for a couple of months. While they waited, they discussed that IF they were allowed to get married in Heaven, SHOULD they get married, what with the eternal aspect of it all. "What if it doesn't work?" they wondered, "Are we stuck together FOREVER?"
After yet another month, St. Peter finally returns, looking somewhat bedraggled. "Yes," he informs the couple, "you CAN get married in Heaven." "Great!" said the couple, "But we were just wondering, what if things don't work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?"
St. Peter, red-faced with anger, slams his clipboard onto the ground.
"What's wrong?" asked the frightened couple. "OH, COME ON!" St. Peter shouts,
"It took me three months to find a priest up here! Do you have ANY idea
how long it'll take me to find a lawyer?"
