Hello veterans and friends of the 75th Division !
A lot has happend since our last regular newsline and the „special issues“
since Sep. 11. Security became more important, and law enforcement and
private security was on full alert. Europe had one extra problem: all the
money in the european countries had to be exchanged against the new currency,
the „Euro“.
These two task took a lot of time, especially time that I would have
needed for the newsline.
I will now try to keep up with the incoming emails and send a few newslines
in the next days. There can be a message in the stack that you have read
before, but I have to send them all out now to be sure that I´m not
missing a message.
Please check all the messages carefully if you can help with some infos. Please also send a CC to here, so we can put all infos together.
I could not include all messages in this issue, so I have to send the
next one soon.
So have fun with the news !

Hello all,
Please be patient with me as I will probably be unable to work on the website for the next few days.
My mother went in for a knee replacement Wed. of this week and ran into
complications. She has been asleep since after the surgery.
Her condition, they think, was caused by some sort of viral infection.
I'd appreciate your prayers for her and my family.

Subject: My Dad
Hello, Mr. Wilmink,
My name is Claudette DeLuna, and the reason I am writing to you is that I recently saw the movie Pearl Harbor, and became interested (finally) in listening to my Dad's stories of his time in WWII. He was a member of the 291st Infantry Regiment, 75th Division, and said something about "I". His name is Ashley Nathaniel Duncan, and I do know for sure that he was at the Battle of the Bulge. He met and married my mother in Warmereville, France. He doesn't know I'm writing to you, but I just thought for your records you would be interested to know about him.
Thanks so much,
Claudette DeLuna

Dear Mr Wilmink,
Could you be so kind to help carry the following message to the veterans and friends of the 75th Infantry Division through your electronic and printed newsletter and perhaps also your website? Your help would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Dr Peter Schrijvers
MESSAGE:
I am a US-educated Belgian historian and author of "The Crash of Ruin: American Combat Soldiers in Europe during World War II" New York University Press, 1998).
I live not far from the Bulge and am currently researching a book on
this legendary battle. As an important part of this project, I am looking
for any memories (however small or anecdotal) that American veterans may
have - or that their families can provide - of the civilian population
in that battle.
These memories may concern, for example, sheltering with civilians
in houses or cellars; aid from civilians or resistance fighters; friendships;
shared suffering; images of refugees or wounded or dead civilians; glimpses
of German war crimes against civilians; or any other aspect involving the
civilian population of the Belgian Ardennes and Luxembourg.
Your valuable recollections of the civilian experience in the Battle of the Bulge would be most welcome in the form of e-mails. Also feel free, of course, to send recollections and/or copies of relevant parts of letters, diaries, or memoirs to the address below. Photographs of Belgian and Luxembourg civilian scenes would be much appreciated, too. Each contribution will, of course, be duly acknowledged.
The people of Belgium and Luxembourg have never forgotten the tremendous courage and sacrifice of the GIs during the German counteroffensive. I would be most honored should you decide to contribute to this project in some way or another.
Sincerely,
Peter Schrijvers

My dad was in the above unit, from 1944 until the end of the war. I see from an Internet site that you have some film footage from the period that includes solders of the above unit. How can I get a copy of this film(s)? My dad will soon be 81, and of course probably won't be around many more years, and I would like to get any info you might have on his WWII role. He finished up a PFC in the above unit, and that period of his life is very important to him, and to his family also. I agree with Tom Brokaw, that that was one of the greatest American generations. They didn't run and hide, they just did their duty and conquered two great enemy empires in doing so. God bless 'um! I can be reached at the e-mail address below. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hoping for some help
I am writing in hope of finding out some information about my grandfather
who died in the Battle of the Bulge on January 20th, 1945. According to
the American Battle Monuments Commission, he fought in the 309th Infantry
Regiment, 75th Infantry Division - but I cannot find any mention of the
390th Infantry Regiment anywhere on the web.
What I do know: his name was Alexander W. Abbott. He is buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium. My grandmother was pregnant when he shipped off and he died before ever meeting his daughter, my mom. I have ordered some photographs of his gravesite for my mother for her next birthday - but I would really like to find out all that I can about this man. I am also named after him.
If you have any information or if you can point me in a good direction,
I would be very grateful.
Sincerely,
Robert Alexander Ferguson
Seattle, WA
Reply
Robert,
If the information you offered was obtained from the American Battle
Monuments Commission, Combat Casualty search page -on the internet, I would
say that their listing him as being in the 390th is a typo error. I did
the search myself and came up with the same response, i.e., 75th - 390th.
I'll just bet that, when you get those pictures, you'll find that he was
actually in the 290th Regiment. If indeed he was in the 75th - 290th, if
I were you, I'd send them an email to get that corrected. I have a casualty
list but, unfortunately, it only covers up to the end of December, 1944.
You might want to write to the National Archives (there is a link to them
on my site members.tripod.com/hldnoq...slinks.htm ) and request the January
20th "Morning Reports" for the 75th Infantry Division - 290th Infantry
Regiment. I have not done this myself but have been given copies of some
of my dad's by veterans of the 75th. Morning Reports were the Army's log
of daily events at the Company level and can be very informative. I understand
that some patience is needed as it takes time to get them. You might also
want to verify, somehow, that he was in fact a member of the 75th - 290th
before doing this. If you could somehow find out what Company he was in
that would help as well. Would your mother possibly have any letters or
memorabilia that might give you more insight? I asked my dad and mom, for
years, if he had ANYTHING that he brought home from WWII and was always
told "no." My mom, just this Christmas, found she had some silverware that
my dad had brought back. It turns out that the silverware had been a personal
item used by a German soldier as part of his mess kit - she had forgotten
all about it and I guess my dad had too. She found the silverware as she
was packing for a move. Anyway - you never know what will pop up. Please
keep us informed on here and hopefully we can help.

Hope all is well with you all! I just thought I'd pass along
another Guestbook signature that you might be interested in, and I wanted
to let you know that I've finally got some free time to start working on
the site again. I've got some more "Remembrances" almost ready to
post and I'm trying to see if Lycos has a Message Forum that I can add
- they didn't want me using the one from Bravenet, so it's gone.
Another milestone (so to speak) is NO MORE AD BANNERS! I have more
bandwidth and more space now as well. I'm also supposed to be getting
a Life Magazine article from the 1960s written about Camp Breckinridge
that I will post - thanks to the son of a 75th veteran. Ray, I haven't
forgotten you on those corrections you sent me many moons ago either, I'll
be fixing those as well. The site will continue to grow so long as
I've got the time. My free time comes and goes depending on overtime
at work, family, etc. You all take care of yourselves!

My dad was injured in the Colmar Pocket Battle. I was young when he told me the story but on Feb 2nd (according to his war record) he was shot 4 times in a crossfire and everyone else in his patrol was KIA except for one that escaped. His fellow soldier said, "Johnny boy, I'm going for help" My father was a POW until VE day. The German doctors amputated his right leg above the knee and he had severe damage to his right arm which ended up about 6 inches shorter than the left. He was also shot in the left leg and right arm which were both flesh wounds. He was a member of K company, 290th. I don't know the battalion but based on what you've wrote it may be 3rd. He died in 1982 but his name was John Nicholas Reynolds and I would be happy for any information you may have.

Hello,
I am close friends with a man named Adam Bignotti, who fought as an infantryman with the 75th in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge and beyond. He is a subject among others in a book I am writing about veterans. He has a Division history book that was released in '46, and would like to ask how to go about getting permission to use some of the images in that book for his chapter that will appear in my book. Also, Adam would like to know if he could get permission to reproduce the "Route of the Fighting 75th" map that you currently display on your Web site.
Adam is not savvy with computers, but I informed him of your site. I hope that you can provide answers to our questions, or possibly direct us to somone who may.

16.) Band Of Brothers
Jvcbvc@aol.com
Sun, 10 Feb 2002 18:32:37 EST
Greetings 75th men and friends.
I recieved quite a shock as I was reading Stephen Ambroses book 'Band of Brothers".I own and have read five of his books, including one of the best I have ever read," Undaunted Courage ".
Band of Brothers is about Easy Company,506th Parachute Infantry Regiment 101st Airborne. a really great story about a great bunch of WW11 men. There is a video also.
My surprise came in Chapter 16 page 248 where the Author is describing the American G.I. reaction to the foreign people he met. The sentence that bothered me is ,and I quote," The Dutch were,as noted, regarded as simply wonderful in every way, but the average G. I. never was in Holland, only the Airborne ".
As a runner in F-Co. 290th Reg. 75th Div. I covered a hell of a lot of ground on foot in Holland. I remember some bad times and some good times ( who could forget the Brits who transported us into Holland ).I sure as hell wasn't dreaming either. Once again those of the 75th who died in combat and those wounded are treated by some Author as though they never existed.
I remember the lies in " A Blood Dimmed Tide " and " Battleing Buzzards ", but to have one of my favorite Authors quilty of seemingly untruths is quite a blow.
Granted our combat was rather light and of a rather short period ( F-Co 290th was in combat in Holland 15 days ). I personally know from the records I have ( Morning Reports ) that F-Co lost 1 KIA, 3 WIA and had 8 sick casualties in Holland.
I would be interested in comments from other people.
Take care and stand proud.
Gerald W Van Cleve F-Co 290th Reg.
Greetings again.
I went back to my records(MR) to check on F-Co 290th time in combat
in Holland and find I made a mistake on the casualtys in Holland.Casualtys
in Holland should be corrected as follows. 1 KIA--2 SWA--3 LWA and 6 sick
to hospital.
SWA meaning serious wounded in action, LWA meaning light wounded in action.
Take care and stand proud.

He was killed on the salt lake on the Ogden side. He was sleeping between two logs and my grandfather said that this man had been stalking him. I have been trying to find his name to see if this person is still alive, he was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. I would like to contact him and find out the details of the events that led to his death. I remembered staying up for the viewing at His fathers house. Toney,
Your email was forwarded to me by Rolf Wilmink. I believe I talked
to some of your relatives a couple of years ago or so about Jonas.
At that time I was trying to locate him because on some of my dad's WWII
things dad had written Jonas' name down. The print was somewhat smeared
and initially it looked like it said "James P. McCall" but after closer
examination I believe that it indeed said Jonas D. McCall.
For some reason the paper that had that information has disappeared.
It had Jonas' name, Army serial number, and the address of an Army hospital
and room number.
Apparently, Jonas was injured or sick and my dad had evidently planned
on writing or visiting him there. Do you know of any illnesses or
injuries that Jonas incurred while in the Army?
It sounds like Jonas was a country boy at heart, like my dad, and so it would come naturally for them to be drawn together. Dad was a real simple person and liked the simple things of life.
If you would, please visit my website at http://members.tripod.com/hldnoqtr/75thdivisiondad.html
and read the information I have there. There are also some pictures
- be sure and check the pictures out to see if your uncle is possibly in
them. Please let me know if you see him. I imagine that your
uncle was in my dad's unit since it seems men normally bonded to those
they were closest to in service. I would guess that your uncle was
in either the 75th Division, 2nd Battalion, Company F, or in the 75th Division,
3rd Battalion, Company L.
Per your email, I would love to hear more about your uncle and any other information you have. I don't know if you have the time but you could research your uncles service through the Army Personnel Records Center and the National Archives, I have links to both on my website. You might have some success researching Army medical records as well. Don't let me discourage you but it is a daunting task and takes some time.
If you have any pictures of your uncle I would love to see them. Maybe you could scan them and send them to me? Anyway, it is really good to hear from you and I hope you'll keep in touch. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.
Jay

Herr Wilmink,
I am Captain John Sinclair, the Signal Officer for the 4th Brigade, 75th Division (TS). I have been tasked to put together a video for our upcoming Division Commander's Conference covering WWII to Present and am in need of footage. How can I get copies of the footage listed on the "Footage" page (http://www.plbg.de/75th/footage.htm) of your website for possible integration into the website. The format for the video will be similar to the one I produced for 4th Brigade which can be seen at http://sill-www.army.mil/475/video.htm

26.) Video information
"Bill Burke" <bburke@ipa.net>
Thu, 10 Jan 2002 23:26:37 -0600
Rolf, I watched an interesting television program on the
History Channel last night regarding stolen art and loot during WW2.
Most of the theft occurred during the occupation and during the last day's
of the war. The program said that the US Government has a group of
people or department that tracks down, recovers and returns items
stolen from Germany during the war.
The name of the program was "History's Mystery's" Secret Plunder:
G.I Looters and it was on TV about 10:00 PM Wednesday
evening.
here is what the program was about...you can also buy the video.

American soldiers returning to home after World War II brought with them all kinds of souvenirs, from German bayonets to good-luck charms given them by thankful citizens. For some, however, the spoils of war went far beyond these keepsakes and trinkets.
Many members of the Allied forces, including highly-placed U.S. Officers, left for home with illicit "souvenirs" worth hundreds of millions of dollars. SECRET PLUNDER: G.I. LOOTERS tells how treasures like the Hesse Crown Jewels and the Quedlingberg Church Collection ended up in the wrong hands. Hear from the investigators who unraveled the tangled threads and exposed the thieves, returning art and artifacts to their rightful owners, and find out about the treasures that remain unfound to this day.
Art and valuables worth hundreds of millions of dollars were destroyed in World War II, but many other prizes were spirited away by victorious soldiers, and the quest to recover this SECRET PLUNDER continues to this day.
This product is unavailable for shipment outside the U.S. and Canada.

Sun, 6 Jan 2002 00:13:25 -0600
Hello, my name is Neil Gillie, my father was a member of the 75th Inf.
Div. in WWII, his name is Nathan H. Gillie. He fought from Dec.24th 1944
to May 9th 1945. He was
severely wounded in Germany on May 8th 1945 while leading his platoon
across an open field to take a railroad depot. He was also awarded the bronze
star for bravery in
the 75th`s first day of combat.
After 50 years my father has started
"opening up" about the war and places they went and the peolple he fought
with and the buddies he lost. In 1995 we attended the 75th`s reunion in
Atlanta, GA., and since then I have become very interested in helping my
father trace his steps in the war and helping him find his buddies.
One person in particular that I`m having
trouble finding is Lt. William D. Corley. Lt. Corley was slightly wounded
in January of '45 and was reassigned to another outfit after he recovered.
This is what i know so far about Lt. Corley;
-he replaced Lt. Colcord as platoon leader of company C,290th,
75th div. in Dec.of '44
-He was wounded in January 24? '45
-He was from either South Carolina or North Carolina
-his serial number is 01042529
If you could help me locate him
or point me in the right direction i would appreciate that very much. thank
you, Neil Gillie. e-mail address is ngillie@home.com

In a recent interview, General Norman Schwartzkopf was asked if he thought there was room for forgiveness toward the people who have harbored and abetted the terrorists who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks on America.
His answer: "I believe that forgiving them is God's function. Our job
is simply to arrange the meeting."
