Hello veterans and friends of the 75th Division !
I have already sent out a Memorial Day special issue, but during my
vacation, so much infos came in that it is enough for another issue, hope
you like it.
We have some new members, that are searching for informations, please
check if you can help them.
Something very positive happend in the last days:
I am now on the subscription list for the "Bulge Busters", the official
printed newsline of the 75th Inf Div Veterans Association. This will help
me very much to supply you with new informations regarding reunions etc.
Please consider, if you are not already, to become a member of that association.
Yearly rates are low, but you also recieve the printed newsletter and on
the reunions, you will maybe meet old buddies that you have not seen for
a long time.
Please keep in mind when reading my newsline and browsing on the 75th
Div website:
Both might contain informations that are not absolutely correct, maybe
because of misspelling, mistyping or bad memory. Please check with the
source (the other reader of the newsline) or with the veterans association
to verify the information. Thanks !
*Keep five yards.
(*Means spread out so one round won't get us all.)

Dear Mr. Mistler - I was the other G.I. from the 75th Inf. Div. with
Jack on his trip to Plettenberg, Germany, three years ago. My wife,
Audri was pleased, also, that Susan came with Jack.
I have done some drawings from old pictures of jeeps which might
help you to accomplish what you have set out to do for Jack's 80th birthday
in September. Will you e-mail me your home address so that I can
mail you the three descriptive sketches? I'm afraid detail may be
lost if we scan them.
This is a wonderful idea to give him a jeep! We will follow it
with interest! Chuck Allred

Rolf,
I probably would not be much help, but I want to offer you my assistance
if you think I can help in some way. You have such a great veterans
site and have been a very big help to me, so I want to give something back.
If I can do any searching on the web or anything let me know.
Thanks for bringing me together with the veterans of the 75th.
The best to you and yours,

Rob,
I read the book by Stephen E. Ambrose titled "Citizen Soldiers" last
winter, not until now did I remember that it spoke of Task Force Hogan.
Interesting reading, but again no mention of the 290ths contributions in
the "rescue" effort. I wrote to Mr. Ambrose quite some time ago about
how my dad was affected by the war, and to compliment him on the book.
To my surprise I received a reply! Now that I know about the 290ths
role concerning TF Hogan, I think I shall be writing another letter to
him....
Here is the excerpt regarding TF Hogan from the book, "Citizen Soldiers"
page 239.
On December 21, Lt. Col. Samuel Hogan's task force of seventeen
tanks, two half-tracks, and about 400 men had been cut off in the village
of Marcouray, on the northern shoulder of the Bulge. It was a pocket-sized
Bastogne. Hogan's parent division, the 3rd Armored, was too hard-pressed
to attempt a rescue. Ammunition, rations, medical supplies were short
or gone. An attempt to shoot in plasma using artillery shells didn't
work. Hogan's men had to endure without fresh supplies or reinforcements
for the next two days.
At noon on Christmas Eve, a German jeep approached Marcouray
under a white flag. A lieutenant, speaking English, demanded that
Hogan surrender. He said resistance was useless, as three panzer
divisions surrounded the village, and added that he was authorized to take
an American officer on a tour of the German positions.
Hogan replied, "We have orders to hold out to the end.
Tell your commander to go to Hell!"
That afternoon, seven C-47 aircraft tried to drop supplies to
Task Force Hogan (which by now had caught the reporters' attention and
was being called in the newspapers "Hogans 400"). German 88s got
six of the seven, and the supplies that were dropped came down outside
the village. The beneficiaries were the Germans and the farmers.
The following day, just as Hogan was finishing his Christmas
dinner of cold K-rations, Maj. Gen. Maurice Rose, the much admired and
loved CO of the 3rd Armored, radioed orders to Hogan to destroy his heavy
weapons and vehicles and get out on foot. The men set to draining
the oil from the engines, then running them until they froze up, putting
sugar in the Gasoline, and dropping breechlocks into the well. Capt.
Louis Spigelman, the surgeon, and several of his medics volunteered to
stay with the wounded.
The less seriously wounded guarded the German prisoners knowing that
roles would soon reverse when the German force moved in.
At 1630, small groups began to move out. Hogan was with
the last group to leave, at 1830. The American lines were ten miles
away, on a straight line. Hogan was wearing fleece-lined British
flying boots, not made for walking through snow. To his dismay, he
had to stop his group to rest. Not until dawn did the first units
reach friends. Hogan was the last to arrive, at 1400 December 26.
When he reported to General Rose, Rose wanted to know why he was the
last man out. Hogan thought of several heroic answers he might give
but decided instead to tell the truth: "My feet hurt."
Hope you dont mind my taking the liberty of sending this to Rolf as
well.
Talk to you later
Jay
++Moderator´s note:++
It´s a little bit out of topic, but when I read the name „Hogan“,
I remembered when I was 15 years old and visited my uncle for 6 weeks in
Trenton, New Jersey. In the evening, I saw „Hogan´s Heroes“, but
I dont think it has to do with the person above. (Was a strange film for
a 15 year old german).

3.) Dad's NEC proposal
Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 00:12:45 EDT
From: Velotec@aol.com
Dear Rolf:
I just now opened the latest
newsline. It hadn't occurred to me that you would publish my Mother's obituary,
but I'm glad you did. Had I thought about it, I would have included more
information on my Dad's involvement in the 75th Infantry Division Assoc.
He was on the road to Nashville with my cousin, Gary driving when I called
his cell phone to tell him that Mom had died. We had agreed that if anything
happened while he was away, he would fulfill his obligations as national
treasurer, and that I would handle the arrangements here. He was surrounded
by people who are as close to him as family, most of whom knew, and loved
my Mom, and who were there to support him at this difficult time.
The National Executive Committee
meeting went well. A good time was had by all who attended in Nashville.
Among other activities for the members was a trip to the Grand Ole Opry.
At the meeting itself, Dad
gave his financial report early. Later in the meeting, he made the motion
concerning the addition of your name to the mailing list for the Bulge
Buster. Some concern was expressed by some members about the accuracy of
information posted on your website, and in the newsline. Someone asked
if it would be possible for you to check with the association before publishing
info ... Dad shot down that idea saying that as moderator of a newsletter,
you had no responsibility to check the facts of information sent to you.
He pointed out that there was no better way for the association to keep
in touch with you than seeing to it that you received the Bulge Buster.
He put forth the idea that your excellent web site had generated interest
in the 75 ID assoc., and had brought in new members that might not have
been reached any other way. The motion then carried without dissent. Dad
will provide the editor/publisher of the Bulge Buster, Jim Warmouth your
correct address in Germany from your email of 3/29/99.
In addition, Dad put forth
the idea that you be provided with info on where to buy a 75th flag for
display. The idea that the 75th's flag might be displayed in Germany went
over well with the members in attendance. Jim Warmouth said he would send
you the address where the association has bought flags, and other related
articles.
In closing, let me thank
you again for the time and effort that went into the 75th's unofficial
home page, and your continuing efforts to keep the history of the Division
alive to all as moderator of the newsline.
Yours Truly.

--------------------------------------------------
Dear Forest,
I have read the message above several times, and I am very happy about
it. I have to thank your father very much for his proposal at the
NEC meeting.
Maybe some thoughts:
1.) I was not sure if I could publish the sad news about your mom, but
I thought that a lot of readers are members of the vets assn and knew your
mother. I thought that if they know about, they will contact you to assist
you in those hard times.
(Good that you wrote that it´s o.k. that I did)
2.) It is possible that some infos on our website are not correct, but
I am not a historian, I was not a member of the 75th, I am even not an
american. We tried the best here to post correct infos on the website,
but it is possible that there are mistakes in it.
Your father was correct when he said, that I cannot check the infos
that are in emails from readers, but when published, there are always other
readers that point to the mistakes. The goal of the newsline is not to
be 100% perfect with the information provided, but that one reader informs
the others, what he is searching or what informations he is collecting
or which informations he can provide. The other readers then can get in
contact with him to go into the deep with the theme. The goal is simple:
Lets get the veterans (or their sons and daughters) together.
There was an example in the last newsline:

They are connections that may or may not ever happen without you and

our only possible contact with men who knew our Fathers. Thank you.

To Jay Puckett and R.J. Anderson -- Sunday, May 9, 1999
Hi guys --
------------------------------------------
Forest, that´s what I mean: Some infos may not be absolutely correct,
but thats not important for the people that are meeting over the newsline.
If I read messages like the one above, it makes me very proud and I
am happy that I could do my little part to make the connections happen.
Regarding the infos on the website:
If there is somebody in the States, connected with the 75th Division,
that has the time and knowledge to maintain new websites and to correct
the other ones, we would be happy to provide the webspaces here. If I understand
my webmaster Horst Hassel correctly, it is even possible to go from outside
into the server and to place new pages.
How about that:
The NEC checks the pages and notes, what has to be corrected.
The NEC lists, what basic informations would be important to post on
the website.
The NEC gives the order to somebody to develop the new pages and to
send them to us.
The NEC then would have the possibility (without much costs) to correct
the existing pages and to post new ones in the internet. I think it could
be a very important project for the Association itself, because more and
more sons of veterans get their first contact to the Association over the
Internet. Where else would you search, when your father has died and you
would like to know more about his unit ? The internet is the fastest way
to get informations, and you dont have to leave the home for it.
Example(posted in the next newsline):
---------------------
"My dad was in the second world war. I have never seen anything specific
on the 75th infantry let alone the 289th regiment that my dad was in. I
would absolutely love a copy of those films of the 289th that you have.

Rock Island, TN
-------------
I think his father, apparently not a member of the association, would
have loved to get in contact again with his old buddies, but it is too
late now. More and more sons and daughters of veterans will sit down and
ask themselfes: Where can I find more infos about my dad´s unit in
WWII ? Then he should find the best infos in the internet on the homepage
of the 75th Div (and he doesn´t care from where it was posted in
the net, he is just happy about the contact).
Maybe it is possible to invite the sons of vets to become an associate
member, without the right to vote etc., but with the possibility to get
in contact with the men who knew their fathers. The additional money could
be used to put informations together (make a video about the 75th with
all material from the NA in it ? Who cares if it is 3-4 hours long ? The
veterans and their sons will love to see them in action) or maybe make
some internet work (create a 75th Inf Div OFFICIAL homepage ?)
O.K., O.K. was just a thought, got overwhelmed.
What I wanted to say is:
1.) Lets preserve all memories, that the veterans have
2.) Lets publish them, at least part of it, in the Internet.
So the heroes of the 75th will never be forgotten, their story will
always be told and can be read in the internet.
3.) The flag:
Thanks again to your father for the proposal. I thought that if the
assn. is selling hats and pins and t-shirts, it would be a nice idea to
sell flags with the 75th on it. You have a lot of occasions to put the
flag out (memorial day, 4th of July etc.) and maybe some 75th Vets will
love to put out the flag of their unit. If it really will happen that one
of the flags comes to Germany, I will post a photo of it in the next newsline
(together with free advertising to buy the flag from the Assn.)
Please tell your father the best greetings from me and thank him again
for his proposal.
Thank you for the good news.
Greetings from Germany
Rolf G. Wilmink
P.S.: How did you like the Elmer H. Ake poems ?

From: Mavsnv@aol.com
Dear Sir: I keep a Certificate of Merit issued to my Father by Colonel
Douglas B. Smith at eyeshot on my wall to remind me of who I am.
I found it a couple of months ago in a box. My Father died May 26,
l990. I am learning just how unassuming most veterans are.
This Merit was issued for outstanding performance prior to the attack on
LaFosse, Belgium December 1944 while accompaning the battalion S-2 of the
289th Infantry. My Father "drove through a heavy concentration of
enemy mortar and artillery fire" after being cut off from the return route
while on a reconnaisance. I knew growing up my Dad was in World War
II ,and that He was in the Battle of the Bulge, however, I never said "Thank
You" to Him and in turn all that represent and stand for our freedoms and
our flag. I hope He knew how proud I am. I found your name
in the 75th Infantry info (to which my Father was so proud of being a part
of). I can not seem to get this very important time in our history
out of my mind. Can you tell me just a little more? It makes
me feel a little closer to my Father, I am a "Daddy's Girl".

++ From the moderator:++
Dear "Daddy´s girl",
thank you very much for your email.
Let me explain a little bit what I am doing here:
I am a german, 40 years old, in live in Plettenberg, Westphalia, Germany,
the city where the 75th Div had it´s last command post in 1945 before
returing back home.
We got in contact with the 75th ID for historical reasons, later put
up a website with infos that we had, and after that, recieved a lot of
emails from veterans that had found our website. We forwarded the emails
to all interested persons and from that, we had the idea to publish all
the incoming emails in an email newsline. You can read the past issues
on our homepage.
I will publish your message in the next issue and I am sure, that you
will get some response from the veterans.
You are also on our subscription list for our (free) newsline, so you
will be in steady contact with the veterans and their sons and daughters.

I am trying to get information on the time my father spent in the 75th.
I don't know what unit he was in, but he has three battle stars, The
Battle of The Bulge, The Battle For The Ruhr Valley, The Battle Southern
France.
What kind of information do you need other than his name, Charles Wilburn
Stephens.
I would like any literature on his unit if possible. If you can't supply
it maybe you know the names of some , and where I could obtain it. Any
information you could supply would be greatly appreciated.
He has never really talked of his time in the war, other than a brief
mention of something here and there. I respect the fact that he doesn't
want to talk about it so I'm trying to get information any way I can.
THANK YOU,
Cody C. Stephens

I made a mistake when saying the 897.898.899 were 155M Howitzers
they were 105M and the 730th had the 155M Guns...
The other thing I was asking you about was the Pa Veterans,it
seems that in as much as this was a Division that was activated in Missouri
they to should have some recognition..Just a thought.
The next thing to bring you up to date is the Reunion in Huston

Dear Sir,
please accept my sincere condolance to the death of your father.
We don´t sell the films from here, we are just listing what can
be found in the National Archives regarding the 75th Division.
One proposal:
We are sending out an email newsline for friends and veterans of the
75th and have at the momement around 150 members, also veterans and sons
(and daughters) of vets that have been in the 289th. I will forward your
message to members of the 289th, maybe one of them has the films already
and can make you a copy. I will also publish your two messages in our newsline
and you are already in our subscription list for our (free) newsline, so
you can get in contact with other relatives of vets or veterans, that might
have known your father.
You can read the past issues on our website, so you might find interesting
informations and email adresses there.
Also, in September is a reunion in Houston, TX, of veterans of the 75th
Division so you might also make interesting contacts there.
(See the past issues of our newsline for more infos).
I hope I could help you at the moment and I am sure, that you will get
some messages from other vets and friends of the 75th.

Hello Rolf, I don't find a blank form to fill in, to become one of the
additions to your roster in the NEWSLINE -- so I hope the following information
will do the trick:
NAME: L TERRY MCDANIEL
E-MAIL ADDRESS: lterrymcd@aol.com
Member of the MINE PLATOON, ANTI-TANK COMPANY, 291ST INF REGT, 75ID
(1944-45)
Retired from Department of the US Army, with the rank of Command Sergeant
Major, in 1982.
Someday perhaps, I will be able to furnish a complete roster of members
of Anti-Tank Company, as of 1945 to your office.
Have a good weekend – Terry

Dear Sir,
thank you very much for your information, I will publish it in the next
newsline so maybe old buddies of you can recognize you and get in contact
with you. We have at the moment around 150 members, including members of
the actual 75th Division in Houston, TX (where the next
reunion in September will be) up to the Commanding General Darrel MacDaniel,
and members of the 75th Inf Div veterans association. Hope you will make
some interesting contacts.
Greetings from Germany

Hi Everyone! On the 15th hole at SunLand Friday - when Chuck despaired
of having a decent score to post - the heavens opened up, the sun shone
through on the lakes and sandtraps, and Chuck's drive with his seven iron
hit the green and disappeared ! Always a thrill, this was his third
hole-in-one; the other two were in 1974 at International T&C, Chantilly,
VA, and 1989 at SunLand. ( Made a lot of people happy afterwards in the
SunLand Club House ) Audri & Chuck

11.) Memorial Day
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 00:58:20 -0500
From: elmerhake <ehake@fuse.net> & Betty Davis <bdeyes@worldnet.att.net>
Hello...
This is to wish you a wonderful Memorial Day and to include the URL
for the website page I have created for you: my family, my friends, and
my veteran friends, for Memorial Day.
On this page some of you will recognize two of the items, one which
is a poem and the other an essay which appear on the Forever Veterans website;
however, I have included them on this page in case some of you haven't
seen them on the website and because they are both very special.
There is an assortment of work on this page for Memorial Day including
a poem written for Memorial Day by a special friend of mine who is a WWII
veteran. Thank you, Elmer!
I am going to be in Texas over Memorial Day weekend so this is
being sent early as I will not return until June 2nd. My son and
his family, who are at Sheppard AFB, will be transferred to Ramstein, Germany,
in mid-June and this is the only opportunity I have to see them before
they leave. The temperature is very cool in Alaska right now and
I understand very warm in Texas! This could be a challenge!
I hope each of you have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day weekend.
Please take the time to go to the URL below this paragraph to see the page
created for you. It will take from 40 to 60 seconds to load depending
on the speed of your computer. If you know someone you think would enjoy
seeing and reading what is on this page, please feel free to forward the
URL or this message to them. Thank you for being my friend.
