Hello veterans and friends of the 75th Division !
A lot of emails came in during my vacation. I am glad to announce that
we also have the new members Reg Perkins, Mayor Larry Boyd (75th Div
Exercise), Kenneth William Hohmann and David Barr as new members what
makes 113 members on the list. This may not sound very much people, but
we are growing faster in the last time and a lot of very helpful contacts
developed from this list.
Please help the new members with their search and send us a CC, so other
members can throw in their informations.
Stay healthy !
Greetings from Germany

Maybe you can go to our homepage at: www.mknet.de/75th
My webmaster Horst Hassel promised me, that he puts all issues of our

Richard, I read your letter posted on the Plettenberg newsline. Your
Dad was probably my classmate at Pratt during 1943/1944. I have some
pictures of my class of Engineering One, Term 2, which was composed
of some 10 sections. The sections were arranged alphabetically---
I was in Section 9, while R.E. Diehl was in Section 2. As a result,
I did not know your Dad well as each section had its' own schedule.
Our barracks was a brand- new, high-rise apartment building which was
originally built as low income housing, but was taken by the Army for
the students. The apartment was located close to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
We were members of ASTP-(Army Specialized Training Program.) The program
was disbanded by the Army in 1944 and most of the students were sent to
the 75th Division which was on maneuvers in Louisiana/Texas. After
maneuvers we trained at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky. I was assigned to
Antitank Company, 290th Regiment, but I don't know where your Dad ended
up, sorry to say. As a matter of interest, some other students in the
ASTP program, but assigned to different colleges were Robert Dole and
Henry Kissinger. Dole ended up in the same Antitank Company as I did.
If you care to send me your snail mail address, I will copy the picture
which has your Dad in it and send it to you. It is only a small group
shot of mostly faces. It has the names of the other members of his
section, so it could be the start of finding someone who knew him.
Good luck in your search for information.
Best, Rob Smith, formerly 75th Division WWII.

Mr. Wilmink,
Thank you very much for adding me to your list. I have already received
a reply from Rob Smith of Florida who attended school at the same time
as my father. Mr. Smith is also been kind enough to forward a picture
to me from the Pratt Institute which includes my Fathers photo.
I was able to get a copy of my father's, Richard E. Diehl, Honorable
Discharge from my mother. He was in Company G 290th Infantry Regiment
of the 75th Division. His military occupation specialty was machine
gunner 604. I am not sure what that means so any help would be
appreciated.
If one of your subscribers or yourself can give me some additional
help I would appreciate it. On his discharge under military
Qualifications ist has, M1 03 Carbine SS Combat Inf., would like to
know what this means.
Also under Decorations and Citations besides his Good Conduct medal,
Victory Medal, and Purple Heart Medal, there is AMERICAN THR SER MEDAL
and EAME THR SER MED W/3 BR STARS. I am not sure what these medals
are or why they would have been awarded.
Again, I want to thank you for the help you and Mr. Smith have given me.
Best wishes and Thanks
Richard E. Diehl Jr.

thank you very much for your information, but thatīs my own homepage

It would be very interesting if you could find any informations about
the 75th Inf Div in Plettenberg from 20. April to June 1945. We are
especially looking for a Major Baker and a Major Robert M. Miller,
the headquarters commandant. We do not have one photo of them but it
would be very important for our city history.

Dear MKW,
Have recently learned of your 75th Div web page from Rob M. Smith and
would like to participate if possible. My unit was: 2nd Bn HQ Co, 291st.
Our Bn commander was Lt. Col Jesse Cyrus Drain, West Point Class of
'36 (I have a copy of the W.P. year book called "The Howitzer" for
that year).
I froze my hands and feet in December, 1944 and thus was not with
division as it reached Germany. However, I have written some
recollections up to that point. I am interested in history and
appreciate your efforts to retrieve your community's artifacts.
I recall your visit to Atlanta in 1995 and you pleas for assistance.

I RECENTLY CAME ACROSS A PACKET OF HIS LETTERS HOME FROM THE WAR. HE

IS THE DORSTEN BATTLE.
I AM ATTEMPTING TO PUT TOGETHER A HISTORY OF MY FATHERS WWII

UNITS OR BAND. I KNOW HE WAS IN CONTACT WITH SEVERAL OF THE OLD

Dear Mr. Wilmink.
Thank you for answering my E-Mail regarding the 75th infantry division.
I joined the 75th in early 1944 and was assigned to "Hq. Co. Anti-Tank
Platoon, 1st Battalion,290th Inf. Regiment. I was 20yrs. old in 1945
and our last activity was in April 1945 in Waltrop, Germany. From there
we were moved to Iserlohn for our Regimental Headquarters. As I remember,
Plettenberg was a little south of Iserlohn.
Our stay in Iserlohn concluded in June 1945, when our Regiment and
Division returned to France. On November 18,1945 the division was
returned to Camp Patrick Henry in Virginia and was de-activated.
I have listed below some history of the 75th Division that I received
from the U.S. National Archives & Records (1) for the 75th division
and specifically the 290th Infantry Regiment, which may be of use to
you. The 290th regiment was attached under the following units (besides
the 75th.div.) during 1944-1945.
Because of the diversity of attachments during these times, it is
extremely difficult to track it's history without more extensive
information. Some of these historical notes may also be found in the
"Presido Press" (2) located in Novato, California.
290th REG.75th DIV. ATTACHMENTS
1: 289th,290th,& 291st Inf. Regiments activated April 1943 at Fort
Leonard Wood, Missouri and assigned to the 75th In.Division.
2: 3rd Armored Div: December 23-31,1944
3: 83rd Inf. Div: December 31,44 -Jan. 1,45
4: 84th Inf.Div: January 1-10,45
5: 75th Inf. Div.Control:January 17-23,45
6: XVIII Corps.Airborne: January 17-23,45
7: 75th Inf. Div.Control: January 23 -February 19,45
8: British 6th Airborne: February 20-21,45
9: 30th Inf. Div: March 26-27,45
10: 8th Armored Div: March 27-30,45
11: 75th Div. Control: April 1,45 -November 18,45 De-Activated in USA
This maybe of interest to any 75th Div. veteran or for that matter any
individual that was in the military before 1960. I found out 50 years
after the end of the WW II, that I was eligible for 2 awards that had
not been issued . I tried for over 2 yrs.to get the government to
recognize the fact these awards were do me and I should receive same.
I finally received an answer that the reason was a large portion of
military records of those who served prior to 1960 were destroyed by
fire at the records center in 1973. Unfortunately my records were
destroyed in that fire. I had saved all my military records, dating
from the day of my entry to the day of my separation from the military.
I, was able to supply over 20 documents to re-establish my service
record in the army.
Veterans that may need proof of military service, should check with
the Reserve Army Personnel Center (3) be sure to refer to their
Army Service Number and Social Security Number. The Military Personnel
Center is also located on the WW II Web Pages.
Are you interested in specific documents, such as a divisions history,
also what type of flags are you interested in American or German?

For your general information, I have written a personal diary about
the 75th division during my time with them, between 1943-1945. Someday
I will put it into book form, as many of the dates and places are
more accurate than some articles I have read.
I have only had contact with one man from my outfit since 1945. I would
appreciate it if his name and address could be published in your
newsletter. Perhaps he may still be alive and will be able to contact me.

6.) Hackers changed troops' blood types on DOD Web site

Subject: Hackers changed troops' blood types on DOD Web site
Pulled this from another list, thought it might be interesting.
Date: Wed, 23 Sep 98 11:58:50 PDT
From: "Peter G. Neumann" neumann@csl.sri.com
In a talk to the Washington D.C. chapter of AFCEA (the Armed Forces
Communications and Electronics Association), Art Money (nominee-to-be
for U.S. AsstSecDef for C-cubed-I) said that "Cyberterrorists have
hacked into and altered the Defense Department's medical World Wide
Web pages that contain information on troops' blood types" according
to an article by Bob Brewin (antenna@fcw.com). Apparently, the
intruders penetrated and altered medical databases at DoD hospitals
in the Southeastern United States.
This incident has reportedly caused the DoD to revisit its policy of
what information to put on its Web pages.
I guess the PREVIOUS hacks did not raise enough alarms? Well, maybe
that will change if Money is on the line. For new readers, the earlier
cases of DoD Web site hacks were in RISKS-19.63 (the Army) and
RISKS-18.64 (the Air Force), with other U.S. Government Web site hacks
noted in RISKS-18.35 (Justice Department), RISKS-18.49 (CIA), and
RISKS-18.88 (NASA). Then there was the Cloverdale case, which
DeputySecDef John Hamre called the "most organized and systematic"
attack (RISKS-19.60).
``Can you spell "security"?'' (and while you are at it, address
integrity, preventing denials of service, and other aspects of
security -- as well as the general preoccupation with confidentiality).

8.) The latest Viagra joke:
This guy walks into a pharmacy and says to the pharmacist, "Listen.
I have three girls coming over tonight. I've never had three girls at
once, and I need something to keep me horny ..keep me potent."
The pharmacist reaches under the counter, unlocks the bottom drawer
and takes out a bottle of "Viagra" and says, "Here, if you eat this,
you'll go NUTS for 12 hours!"
The guy says, "Gimme 3 boxes."
The next day, the same guy walks into the same pharmacy, right up to
the same pharmacist and pulls down his pants.
The pharmacist looks in horror as he notices the man's penis isblack
and blue, and the skin is hanging off in some places.
The man says, "Gimme a bottle of Ben Gay."
The pharmacist replies, "BEN GAY?!?!?! You're not going to put "Ben Gay"
on that are you?"
The guy says, "No, it's for my wrists, the girls didn't show up."
