Dear friends of the 75th:

1.) If you visit our homepage (www.mknet.de/75th) again, you will now
find a picture of a limited medal (in colour), that was made for our big
jubelee convention.
The first 20 guests, that contact us for registration to come to
Germany, will recieve one for free (at the day of your arrival) !!

2.) Mr. John Mistler, 75th Div Veteran, living in Citrus Heights,
California, now can be reached over the email-adress of his brother
Ralph: rmistler@ix.netcom.com
Mr. Mistler was with the 75th Div HQ and spent some time in our
hometown Plettenberg, Germany, in 1945. He has good memories
of our town and of the Schulte-family, who invited him to a dinner
the night before he went back to the States in 1945. (Wow, that
homemade icecream).

3.) We are trying to get a 75th Div flag for our flagpole. We will
contact the 75th Div (Exercise) in Houston, TX. Any other
suggestions ?

4.) The registered members of the 75th Div Vets Assn, that receive the
newsletter "Bulge Buster", will hopefully read in the february issue
about our invitation to Germany. I dont know how fast we can get an
issue, so we have a question: Can somebody, that has that issue and a
fax machine, contact us ?
We would like to know if the invitation is in there and would like to
get the article via fax. Thanks in advance !!

5.) Do you know a veteran of the 75th Div, that can be reached via email
or has an own homepage ? (Maybe the son or daughter has internet access
?) Please mail us the adress, and he will be on our 75th email server.
If you want to spread a message to all that people, send us the mail, we
forward it.

Greetings from Germany

Subject: RE: historical flag
Date: Tuesday, April 01, 1997 4:00 PM

Dear Mr. Wilmink:
My father, Myron Halpern, was a member of the 75th infantry, and fought
in the battle of the Bulge. I fondly recall the late 1940s and he
telling me real war stories. Among them was the ravages of the first
night on the lines at the Battle of the Bulge. One of the war momentos
brought back was a flag ( not American) with the 75th infantry patch
sewn in the middle, and the signatures of all his company bretheren on
the flag. What is significant about the item is that he told me that a
captured german prisoner sewed the patch on the middle of the flag,
which represented the 75th infantry conquest over the enemy. The flag
is that of the enemy.
Is this of any interest ?
Jason Halpern
-----------------------------------
Dear Mr. Halpern,

everything we hear from veterans of the 75th is interesting. Do you know
more about the flag or have you seen it ? We are looking for 2 old
flags, that went as souvenirs to the states, but had nothing to do with
the Nazis.
Please take a look at our page http://www.mknet.de/75th under
"flagsearch" you will find two drawings of the flags. Would be very
interesting if they are the flags you mentioned.
The flags are from our hometown Plettenberg, Westphalia, Germany and
were here until May 1945.

What unit was your father in, f.e. 289, 290 or 291st Reg. ?
Did he had the chance to visit our hometown in these days ?

Do you know that the 75th has a very active veterans association ?
They even have a museum in Houston, TX with 75th Div Exercise.

If you would like to contact veterans of your fathers unit, I could pass
your email adress around, so they can write to you !

Would like to hear more from you and storys of your father. Please tell
me more about the flag !!

Greetings from Germany
Rolf G. Wilmink
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Mr. Wilmink:

Thank you for your return mail. As you probably guessed, the flag my
father brought back was a captured nazi flag, and he had a captured
german prisoner sew on the 75th infantry patch. I do not know what unit
my dad was in, but he did tell me that the first night of the Battle of
the Bulge, there were @ 250 men in his company, and when the mess trucks
delivered breakfast the first morning of the Battle, there were six (6)
men left alive in my father's company. If that is an accurate
representation of what occurred, maybe those casualty numbers will help
you identify more specifically what his unit was. I still have his dog
tag.
It bore the following numbers: 42059516 T44 450.

I have photos he took in Belgium, have the v-gram that was sent to him
when I was born( he did not see me until I was 16 months old), some of
his medals and remember many stories he told of the grizzly realities of
was, ranging from what happened with 90 day wonders to incidents at the
Aberdeen Prooving Grounds in early '44, where he went for basic
training.

I look forward to hearing from you again.
---------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. Halpern,

as you see in this email, I have send your info out to the others in the
75th Email server. I hope somebody knows your father or maybe can give
you hints where to look for more infos. The 75th Vets Assn has very good
archives, and maybe they dig out something there.
I am sure that it is also possible to gain informations from the
authorities (Veterans Administration etc.) about your father, what unit
he was in, medals etc. We have some experts here (Hi Bill :-)) that know
where to look and whom to ask. Please tell me, if you have found out
more or how else I can help you.

Dear Mr. Wilmink:

I forgot to add in the last e mail that I would welcome your passing on
my email address to surviving members of the 75th. It would be
interesting to speak to someone who may have been with my dad when he
found out about my birth, etc.

I read your letters about your Dad's 75th Infantry Division experience.
If you are able to read the names on the flag I will be glad to check
them against a listing of 75th Division Veterans Assn. members which I
have. I was in Antitank Company, 290th Infantry Regiment, 75th
Division and do recall that K Company 290th, had heavy casualties
similar to what you describe during the period December 24 -25, 1944.
Send the names if you wish and I will try to be helpful.
Regards, Rob Smith - Florida, USA.
------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. Wilmink:
Thank you for your help. I heard from a Robert Smith in Florida, USA,
who was anti tank, remembers heavy casualties in at least one unit, K, a
even specifies the dates they occurred, and has invited further input
and offerred to help.
It is satisfying and warming to have some anticipation of reaching out
and touching a part of my heritage. I know my father would be
appreciative of the commraderie.

Dear Mr. Halpern,
Had another thought after receiving your reply re your Dad's souvenir
flag.
If you are interested in researching your father's military history you
may wish to e-mail a request for FORM 180 ( 3rd paragraph of attached)
and bounce it off Natl Personnel Records in St.Louis. If you have your
father's discharge attach a photo copy. It will probably take FOREVER to
get a reply from St.Louis. I had dealings with them a few years ago and
finally had to enlist the aid of my Congressman to get a satisfactory
reply.
..........FYI..... the 8 digit number on the dog tag is an army serial
number.
The T 44 -45 are the dates of his tetnus shots and the O -blood type.

You may also find a P - C- or H which denotes religion. Good luck if
you go this route.

Dear MR. Smith: I started going thru my dad's war memorabilia and here
are some items that may be of help: His discharge papers show:
organization: 775 ORD CO 75 INF DIV
             GRADE TEC5
             ARM OF SERVICE INF

BATTLES AND CAMPAIGNS ARDENNES, CENTRAL EUROPE, RHINELAND, GO33
WD 45

As Amended he was not wounded in battle ( REAL LUCKY)
At some time in Europe, he sent home photos in a package marked:
Etablissements NICAISE
REIMS 65, Rue de Vesle Tel 48-77
Tout ce qui concerne la photo et la cine (translated means:
Everything concerning photos and movies)
Memes Maisons:
CHALONS-sur-MARNE & EPARNAY

another photo of himself in a ( I presume Swiss) country side area has
on the back
AND ON THE PHOTO PACKAGE:
             studio dorsazphoto AO534
             LAUSANNE
     ` 7 av d'ouchy Tel 2 62 82
Succursale a Champex-le-lac it appears that my dad was staying at the
Hotel Royal et Savoy there is one picture that my father apparently took
of 12 men with a small dog in front of them. They are in front of some
tents seen in the background. Looking at the photo, the sarge is on the
left, and the GI on the right has his hands in his pockets with a 35 mm
camera hanging from his neck.
The dog has a white body with black patches over its eyes.
Any help? Turns out I threw out the nazi flag within the last year
because of an incident my daughter ( 8 years old) was involved with in
school, so the names are lost on this end)

Let me know if this rings a bell with anyone.

Thanks for yours of April 7, indicating that the 775 th Ordnance of the
75th Div. was your Dad's military connection.

I searched the 75th Division Veteran's Assn. membership list for members
giving 775 Ord. as their unit and found the following:
Ray Hopkins,153 Prine St.,Needham,MA 02192
Lawrence LaPerriere, 19343 Brandywine, Riverview,MI 48192
Charles Nagy, 580 Deauville Drive, Dayton, OH 45429
William Wilcock, Oak Run Co. Club, Ocala, FL 34476
3 other members listed their unit only as Ord and may be " possibles":
Arthur Cowan, 4204 Ferraza Drive, Wheaton,MD20906
Paul Cunningham,P.O.Box2696, Salisbury,MD. 21802
Charles Wilcock, 610 Paddock Rd., South Hampton, PA 18966

None of the above are personally known to me and I had no contact with
your Dad's unit during WWII. Regret to say that the other "clues" you
mentioned mean nothing to me, but might be recognized by some of the
above veterans.

FYI: I am also a Brooklyn boy, and if you know Brooklyn, I went to
Brooklyn Technical High School and Pratt Institute.

I would be curious to learn if you obtain any positive results from the
above info.

75th Division newsline No. 3

Freitag, 23. Mai 1997 Hello friends and veterans of the 75th Division !

Things are developing, and we are looking forward to the weekend of June
15th, where we will have the big parade in our town.

Today, two important persons were invited by our city director:
General Darrel McDaniel and Sgt Maj Bill Burke, both 75th Div Exercise !

The letter went out today and I hope they can make it !

Did you tell your buddy or other veterans about that event ? Please
spread the message, it would be so good to have a lot of 75th veterans
here in the town, where they had their last command post in 1945.

Thanks to Mr. Warmouth, there even was an information in the 75th Div
newsletter "Bulge Buster", and we hope a lot of veterans read it and
will come to Germany.
The article contained 2 little mistakes: The internet adress was not
correct, and the phone and fax numbers to get contact to Germany were
from our local newspaper.

So, what else is new ?
1.)
We have two emails from Debra, who is searching informations for her
grandfather. It would be nice if somebody could help !
2.)
There is an email from S. Lang (dont know from where) who needs
informations from Metz, France. This will be a bit tricky, but hopefully
some other veterans already have a contact to there. The case is urgent,
because the veteran wants to travel there in may !! (What unit of the
75th was there anyway ?)
3.)
We recieved an email from The America War Library, that our site will be
listed there ! Hopefully, this will bring new contacts to other veterans
of the 75th Div. Please visit their homepages, they contain a lot of
interesting informations !
4.)
We changed our homepage again, you will now see a US flag, that is
moving in the virtual winds. Also, we included now 3 maps that you can
look on. (Next, we try something with music).
If you know of other interesting homepages for veterans of the 75th,
please mention them to us, so we can report about it. We also would
cheer, if you write a little article, that we can spread in the net.

Please write us also, what you would like to find on the homepage of the
75th !

My grandfather was wanting to find a friend. When I saw your web page, I
noticed you had certain names. Is there any way we could get me the
names of the 75 th division and company M 291st empatrie...?
Debra
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Debra,

sure we can help you.

1.) Does your grandfather remember the name of the friend ? We have a
roster of all members of the 75th Div Veterans Association. We can take
a look there to see if he is a member.
2.) If you email to me what you have (names, unit, places where he has
been in europe, old adress etc.), I can forward your email to all
veterans of the 75th, that we have on our email-server list. I know,
that there are veterans of the 291st among them. So you could get a
quick response.
3.) If you email to me what you have, together with your (or your
grandfathers) complete adress, maybe also phone and fax, I can forward
the message to the newsletter of the 75th Vets Assn, the >Bulge Buster<,
so they can publish it.
Then all veterans in that Association (around 2000) can read it and you
will get a big response.
4.) Please see on our homepage, that there is a special meeting for
veterans of the 75th in Plettenberg, Germany, this year.

Also there is a 75th veterans reunion in USA. Please contact the
president Angelo Borracchini for more informations, you will find his
adress also on our homepage. (Please tell him that you found him through
us !) Maybe your grandfather can meet his friend there !

My dad was in the 75th. At the end of the war he was required to guard
german POW´s. He became friendly with several, but he remembers only
one name "zigger". The camp was located outside of Metz, France and was
also a food distribution site (may - june 1945). Although all of these
men would be quite old, he would really like to meet them again. My mom
and him are going to Europe during the month of may and he will be going
back to many of the places he was at in WWII. He believes that if he
saw a list of names of the pows that worked at that camp during that
period, he would recognize them immediately.
Is there any way to get such a list? He has been amazed at what I have
been able to find so far on the computer.

75th Division newsline No. 4

13 May 1997 - Dear veterans and friends of the 75th Div,
again I have collected some emails from you. I post them here, because
they may be interesting for you.

We are looking for a good route program, that brings the whole USA (and
little towns) as maps on our PC. Which one is the best and where can we
get it ?

One important thing in our own case: We have located the old ceremonial
chainof our mayor, that went missing in 1945. It seems to be in the
hands of an antiques dealer near Philadelphia, PA. We just recieved a
fax, that he is not selling it back to us. It seems, that he also knows
about the flags we are searching.
Any suggestions what we can do ?

Dear Sir,
do you know where I can locate some copies, for example photocopies of
the small-scale topographical maps of places the 75th fought at in
Europe during World War II ? Thank you.

jclayjr1@aol.com
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. Clay,
you will find three maps, that you can printout or download, on our
homepage.

The maps: The Battle in the Ardennes
                   The Colmar Pocket
                   The Battle for the Ruhr

can be found in the booklet "The 75th Infantry Division in Combat".
There is a reprint existing, presented to the members of the 75th
Division Veterans Assembly in 1995 on the 50th anniversary of World War
II by Benjamin I. Twigg. Mr. Twiggs adress:

Benjamin I. Twigg
15256 Devon Green Lane
Naples, Florida 33963
813-592-1023
813-592-0156 (fax)

94 Cricket Knoll Lane
Carmel, Indiana 46033
317-848-5464
317-848-7604 (fax)
(Yes, he has two adresses on his business card, I assume it is winter
and summer adress. Try both.)

The map: Route of the Fighting 75 Division
I found first in an advertising flyer of the travel agency
King Travel Service
2901 SW 29th Street
Topeka, KS 66614
800-888-2205
It was a bad copy on the front page.
I believe the original was coming from a booklet, that the soldiers of
the 75th recieved in 1945, when they returned home on the ship. This
booklet was printed in Paris, France. We only have recieved a copy from
the States.

If you want a good copy, you should contact the 75th Div (Exercise), the
todays Division. They brought out a green booklet concerning the history
of the 75th from WWII until now, and it contains the map, as far as I
remember. (Its in the office of the webmaster of the 75th homepage at
the moment, so I cant take a look in it. ) See that you can get a new
edition, the first one contains some mistakes in the subtitles of the
photos.
On the fighting map, you see one town at the end of the route:
Plettenberg !
That is the place where you recieved this email from.
I will forward this email also to SGM Bill Burke of 75th Div (E), who
has send me my copy. He sure can tell you where and how to get yours.

One question:
Are you or your father a veteran of the 75th Div ? We are trying to get
in contact with as many veterans as possible, especially if they didnt
heard until now, that there is a Veterans Association of the 75th to
recieve informations from. I visited once a reunion, and they had a lot
of fun digging in memories.

If I can help you further, please do not hesitate to contact me. I will
enclose you in our 75th Email server, so that you recieve the latest
news from the 75th.
(Did you read on our homepage, that a lot of 75th veterans are coming to
Germany, Plettenberg, this year ?)

Tom was 19+ years old when he went to war. Among other activities he's
told us about, there's one particulary amusing one about when he pulled
guard duty... and he's thus interested in whether there were any lists
created with the names of prisoners he guarded near Metz
France...(sp?). He's told us many times about France & Belgium and mud
and frozen feet at the end of the war ... and when my father (who was a
paratrooper on D-day) and him get together... we just let them talk &
enjoy the good memories...

To All;
I have been recieving your messages for some time now but would like to
point out that I am the son of J. Frank Labor Jr.
My father was attached to the 79th. Inf. Div. Dad kept a diary of his
experiences and I am looking for anyone who may have known him or been
attached to the 79th Div. And know were they were positioned on the
19th and 20th of Feb. 1945. Dad led a mission to patrol the area and
that patrol was more of a raid the a recon. patrol. I am looking for a
town called "Daunshiem"( Not sure of spelling ). His patrol was
ordered to raid the village and things went bad for the patrol. The
enemy strength had been under estimated and although three of the 10
escaped the town, the two GI's with dad were killed when they ran over a
anti-tank mine on the way back to their lines.
If anyone could help me locate that town/village it would mean a great
deal to me. Thank you

When I searched Army Alumni Assn for the 79th Infantry Division,(found
on the 75th Div. pages links) it makes referral to the 313 Infantry
Regiment which was probably part of the 79th.
You might want to check it out to see if the have any helpful info.
Good luck.--Rob Smith-former 75th Div.
